Samwell Tarly, often called Sam, is a character in the HBO television series Game of Thrones, based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin. He is portrayed by John Bradley.
Samwell is the eldest son of Lord Randyll Tarly of Horn Hill, a formidable warrior who deemed Sam unworthy as his heir due to his lack of martial prowess and intellectual bent. He was effectively disowned and forced to join the Night's Watch.
